“Creativity is the way I share my soul with the world.”

– Brene Brown

Hello, I’m April.

Have you ever wanted to live a more creative life? Me too.

I’m a visual artist from western New York. I’ve worked for many years as a freelance graphic designer while balancing my home life. Although I feel very blessed to be able to work in a creative field; in recent years I’ve really felt the importance of having creative pursuits that I do for myself outside of client work. It is so easy to feel drained when balancing work and family if you don’t take at least a little time to do something that you enjoy and that helps you to feel a sense of personal growth. I feel like having this as one of my goals makes me a more balanced person and is also essential to developing my creativity.

I recently graduated college after returning to earn my BA in web graphic design. For the previous three years I had attended college part time while running my business and balancing a family. Although I’m very proud of this accomplishment it left me feeling burnt out and very much in need of some me time.

I started developing a stationery line because I felt a need to create something that was my own. I felt that this would give me some time to get back to drawing which is my first love and what made me choose to explore a creative career in the first place. I think that so often we lose sight of who we were before we started families and/or careers and life became so hectic. It is so easy to fall into completely living for others and not taking any time for ourselves, which isn’t good for anyone. Since starting this process, I feel like I’m growing as an artist. It’s been a real boost to my confidence and has left me feeling a healthier balance in my life.

Colburn Creative Life is my new blog where I will post articles exploring creative pursuits that I enjoy. I will explore subjects such as drawing, crafting, design principles, gardening, cooking, and venturing out into nature. These are the all things that help me to feel more fulfilled and well rounded. I think we all want to feel more engaged and inspired in our daily lives. Hopefully my experiences can help you to get ideas and to feel inspired too.

Enjoy…
